Why is deforestation such a big issue?
Deforestation is causing double the CO2 emissions that all the worlds transport makes, because of deforestation. ”In the next 24 hours, deforestation will release as much carbon dioxide as would be produced by aircraft carrying 8 million people from London to New York” Global Canopy Programme”, Oxford University. The method they’re using, to replant trees is not working because its not keeping up the pace with the rate trees are being cut down at. There is a clear link between deforestation and climate change, of which scientists have come to notice. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, but when the trees are cut down, all the oxygen they’ve stored is released into the atmosphere and this causes the greenhouse effect. 80% of the world’s biodiversity habitat in the forests and the majority of the earth’s insects are discovered in our tropical forests. Throughout every passing year, hundreds of habitats are destroyed, along with the other thousands of hectares of trees, of which are chopped down every hour; this is bringing hundreds of animals and insects on the brink of extinction. Statistics shows that 1 acre of forests are cut down every SECOND! So in the time it’s taken for you to read this, plenty of acres have been cut down. You can imagine why this is such an issue, what would we do without forests?
THEY WOULDN’T HAVE MUCH FOOD, THAT’S FOR SURE!
